Here's a timeline of Monday's events.
7:15am: They received a 911 call at the West Ambler Johnston Hall. Officers found two people shot, one is dead, the other would be soon. Officers secure the hall and tell students to stay in their room.
7:30am: Officers develop person of interest.
8:25am: Virginia Tech leadership team assembles. Talks about how to notify all students about the shooting.
9:26am: By 9:26 36,000 emails are sent out. The weather line is activated to send messages to phones.
9:45am: At 9:45 another 911 call comes in for a shooting at Norris Hall. Officers find the doors chained shut from the inside. They break through the doors and hear gunfire. By the time the officers get to the second floor the shooting has stopped. They say they find the shooter dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound.
10:04am: The university encourages everyone to stay indoors and away from windows. West Ambler Johnston and Squires are locked down.
10:20am: All classes are canceled.
10:36am: Due to serious wind helicopters cannot be used to transfer the injured. According to police scanners, ambulances used to transport the victims to Montgomery Regional Hospital.
12:23am: Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger and others hold news conference and make the stunning announcement that at least 22 people were dead including the gunman. All Tuesday classes canceled. Officials give preliminary report of the shootings. Announces Governor Kaine is returning from Asia Economic Trip.
2:00pm: President Bush addresses the nation stating he is "shocked and saddened" by the shooting rampage.
4:30pm: Steger and others hold another news conference announcing that the death toll had reached 33. He and his staff try to answer questions about how the situation is handled and about delays in notifying the Tech community. It is announced that a public gathering will be held Tuesday at Cassell Coliseum at 2:00pm.
7:40pm: Another briefing is held with more details about the shootings and the numbers of wounded. Dozens of journalists grill administration officials about the handling of the incidents. A toll free number, 800-533-1144 is given out for parents to call for information on their children.
10:00pm: A news conference is scheduled for Tuesday at 9:00am. A candlelight vigil is scheduled for 8:00pm.
Here's a timeline of Tuesday's events.
9:15am: Gunman identified as 23-year-old undergraduate student Cho Seung-Hui a South Korean. Tech officials also say a weapon was used in both campus shootings Monday at the West Ambler Johnston Hall dormitory and two hours later at Norris Hall, an academic building. Virginia State Police say ballistics tests show one of the guns found was used in both shootings. A 9-millimeter handgun and a .22-caliber handgun were found at Norris Hall.
